My Remarkable Journey Back to Fitness
I started a membership at a gym almost a year ago going a few times at first but, honestly, felt a little unmotivated and overwhelmed. I managed to get restarted a few times but never stuck with it more than a couple visits.
I decided to try something new but wasn’t ready for an in-person trainer. Instead, I tried an online coaching program and am thrilled with the results. I’d like to share my experience with Online Coaching and the remarkable transformation after several years of inactivity. My fitness program is off to a good start this time around.
Once I signed up, an email arrived with a link to the app and instructions on how to get started. From the outset, the user-friendly interface and personalized approach of the app made me feel at ease. I went through the first workout using the app to track my results. The 6-week program is customized for beginners so I made it through the first workout without too much effort.
I decided to stick with it and connected the app to iPhone Health which tracks my steps. Other than looking better and having more energy, I wanted to lose weight and lower my blood pressure. I started tracking both on my iPhone. They synced to the app to help monitor my progress. The app also has a place to take and store progress photos. I wasn’t ready for that but it is a nice option to have available.
I missed my next workout but was able to reschedule it in the app for the following day. I also received a message from the trainer encouraging me to stick with the program. The second session had just a little bit more work but still wasn’t too difficult. The exercises were all on the cardio equipment and the machines at gitfit. Each station included a How-To video and instructions so I could be sure I was doing it correctly. Probably not as good as an in-person trainer but gave me all the help I needed.
The scheduled workout in the app provided much needed accountability. If I missed a day, I quickly made it up and stayed on the program for the next two weeks. The app tracked my sets, reps and weights so I knew where to start the next time.
I had a little extra energy and discovered I could add an exercise to the scheduled workout. The app made it easy to find Machine Bicep Curls and add it to the program. In my next workout, I was able to substitute a different station for the one on the plan. I appreciated the flexibility to make those small customizations.

An unexpected benefit of the online coaching app was the end of workout celebrations. At the conclusion of each workout, there’s a summary highlighting my accomplishments and new personal bests! It was encouraging to see the small gains I was making each workout.By Week 3, the programs were getting progressively harder. Some workouts were better than others mostly based on my energy level that day but they were all better than the ones I did on my own. Frankly, I was surprised I stuck with it for a full month but it was definitely easier making time for the gym by that point. It became part of my normal schedule and routine. The next week brought a low-key introduction to the Push, Pull, Leg (PPL) split with a few new stations for each muscle group followed by a week of full body strength training. The final week, Week 6, took me through a slightly more full-bodied PPL workout which included a day just for conditioning. At the conclusion of the program, I felt a tremendous sense of accomplishment. I had become comfortable on the cardio and strength training equipment for all the main muscle groups. I was able to develop quality form using light- to medium-weight doing roughly 10-20 reps per set. I lost just over 10 pounds and my clothes fit better than they have in quite a while.
If you are someone who, like me, has not been on a good fitness routine for a while, I wholeheartedly recommend giving this app a try. |
